Ask three Bengaluru groomers what they charge and you'll get three different answers, partly because "a groom" means something different at each place and partly because so much depends on your dog. Still, there's a clear pattern: a full groom starts at around ₹1,000 for a small dog, ₹2,000 for a medium one and ₹3,000 for a large, heavy-coated one.
What it costs
These are the ranges that published price guides show for 2026. Use them to compare quotes, not as a rate card.
| Size | Typical breeds | Full groom from |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Pug, Lhasa Apso | ₹1,000 |
| Medium | Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Indie | ₹2,000 |
| Large | Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd | ₹3,000 |
If you only want one or two things done, most places charge separately:
| Service | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Bath and blow-dry | ₹500 to ₹1,250 |
| Haircut or trim | ₹800 to ₹1,600 |
| Nail trim | ₹200 to ₹300 |
| Ear cleaning | ₹250 to ₹400 |
| De-shedding add-on | ₹200 to ₹500 |
| Anti-tick or medicated bath | ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 |
A groomer who comes to your home, or turns up in a van, usually charges ₹200 to ₹500 more for the same work.
Why your quote might be higher
- The coat, more than the size. A small Shih Tzu with a long coat can take longer than a short-haired Labrador. Breeds whose hair keeps growing (Shih Tzus, Lhasas, Poodle crosses) need proper haircuts, while short coats mostly need a wash and a good brush.
- Matting. If the coat has knotted close to the skin, the groomer has to work through it slowly or clip it short, and most charge extra. Clipping is often the kinder choice. An hour of tugging at knots isn't pleasant for any dog.
- A nervous dog. Some salons charge more or book a longer slot. Mention it when you book. A groomer who knows what's coming is far better than one hurrying a frightened dog through 45 minutes.
- The neighbourhood. A salon in Indiranagar or Koramangala is likely to cost more than one in an older residential area.
What a full groom includes
Ask before you book, because the phrase stretches.
| Normally included | Often extra |
|---|---|
| Brushing out and de-shedding | Teeth brushing |
| Bath with shampoo and conditioner | Anal gland expression |
| Blow-dry | Anti-tick treatment |
| Haircut or trim in the style you agree | "Perfume" |
| Nail trim and ear cleaning | |
| Tidy-up of paw pads and sanitary area |
You're free to say no to any of the extras.
How often your dog needs it
| Coat | Breeds | Professional groom |
|---|---|---|
| Short | Indie, Labrador, Beagle, Pug | Every six to eight weeks, with a brush and the odd bath at home |
| Long or always growing | Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Poodle, Maltese | Every four to six weeks, plus brushing several times a week |
| Double | Golden Retriever, Husky, German Shepherd | A de-shedding session when they moult heavily, and plenty of brushing |
That frequency adds up. A Shih Tzu on a four-to-six-week cycle can cost ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 a month, which is worth knowing before you fall for the breed.
Three things a good groomer won't do
Leave if a groomer offers to sedate your dog. Sedation is a medical decision and belongs in a vet clinic. "I'll give him something to calm him down" is your cue to pick up your dog and go.
- Shave a double coat as a summer cut. It's tempting to think a Husky or Golden Retriever would be cooler without the fur in a Bengaluru April, but the undercoat insulates against heat as well as cold. Shaving it can lead to sunburn and patchy regrowth, and it doesn't make the dog cooler. Without a medical reason, find a different groomer.
- Leave a dog alone in an enclosed cage dryer. Dogs have died of overheating that way. The answer you want is a hand-held blower, or a stand dryer with someone watching.
- Hide the room. You may not be allowed to stay during the groom, but you should always be able to see where it happens.
Salon or at home?
| At home | Salon | |
|---|---|---|
| Suits | Dogs anxious in the car or around other dogs, older dogs | Big dogs, heavy coats |
| Price | ₹200 to ₹500 more | Lower |
| Ask | What they need from you, usually a drain and a plug point near the tub | Do dogs wait in separate crates, and how many are groomed at once |
Finding a groomer
We list 43 groomers in Bengaluru, with their hours, numbers and locations. Call two or three, tell them your dog's breed, weight and coat condition, and compare what's included as well as the headline price.
It may soon be worth asking for a licence number, too. Bengaluru's draft pet licensing bye-laws, published for comment in 2026, would require groomers to be licensed for the first time once they come into force.
Common questions
Quick answers to what people ask most.
How much does a Shih Tzu haircut cost in Bangalore?
A full groom with a haircut starts at around ₹1,000, and more if the coat is matted or you book an at-home visit.
Does an Indie need grooming?
Not often. Indies have short, low-maintenance coats. A bath when they're dirty, a weekly brush and a nail trim when you hear their nails clicking on the floor is usually all they need.
Can I use my own shampoo on my dog?
Better not. A dog's skin has a different pH from ours, and human shampoos can dry it out. A mild dog shampoo, or a medicated one your vet recommends, is kinder.
