When a dog in Bengaluru needs blood, the hospital treating them is your first call. There is no citywide stock that every clinic can draw from. Blood has to be typed or cross-matched and the donor has to be screened, so a bag or a dog offered by a kind stranger is only useful once a veterinary team says it is safe for this patient.
What do you need right now?
If your dog needs blood now
Ask the hospital four questions, then look for a donor that fits what the vet asked for.
Call the hospital treating your dog and ask:
- Does my dog need whole blood, packed red cells or plasma?
- Have you typed or cross-matched my dog, and what kind of donor are you looking for?
- Do you have blood or registered donors available now?
- If not, which Bengaluru hospital should I call next?
Once the vet gives you the criteria, ask your building group, your dog-walking friends and local dog groups for a donor that fits them.
Keep the hospital as the meeting point. Don't arrange a private collection, don't move blood between homes, and don't post your home address or your dog's medical records in public groups.
Who to call in Bengaluru
One hospital with its own blood-bank support, and two donor networks.
- LeelaVet Multispeciality Veterinary HospitalBtm 1st Stage
- The Animal Life Line NetworkDonor and hospital network
- Blood4PetsFree donor matching
- LeelaVet has in-hospital blood-bank support. It screens donors, types and cross-matches blood, and keeps a registry that welcomes qualified donor pets.
- The Animal Life Line Network connects Bengaluru donors and veterinary hospitals and gives donors a health check. Ask which partner hospital will collect and screen the blood.
- Blood4Pets is a free donor-matching service. It finds a possible donor, and the receiving hospital does the screening and cross-match.
Blood isn't always in stock at any of them, which is why the hospital call comes first.
VOSD's canine blood bank closed on 1 September 2015. Old search results still point there, so don't travel to it for blood.
For other urgent care, our Bengaluru emergency-care list has clinics by area. A clinic being open doesn't mean it has a transfusion team, so ask on the phone.
Could your dog donate?
A healthy, calm, vaccinated dog between one and eight years old. Many hospitals want 25 kg or more.
India's Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying published an advisory blood-bank SOP in August 2025. It says a canine donor should be:
The SOP sets different minimum weights by breed size. In practice, many hospitals and most urgent Bengaluru requests ask for a large dog of around 25 kg or more, because one collection then gives a useful adult dose. The hospital's transfusion vet decides, so don't rule your dog in or out from a forwarded message.
What happens at the hospital
A health check and blood tests first, then a collection from the neck, then one to two hours of rest.
- The hospital examines your dog, reviews their medical history and takes screening samples. The SOP specifically includes checks for Babesia and Ehrlichia.
- You give written consent.
- If your dog is eligible and compatible, staff clip and clean a small patch on the neck and collect blood from the jugular vein into a measured bag. The SOP's guide is 15 to 20 ml per kg, and the veterinary team chooses the amount for your dog.
- Your dog is watched for one to two hours, then given fluids, light food and rest.
Ask the hospital what to watch for at home and when your dog can exercise again. The SOP allows repeat donations at set intervals. That is a ceiling, not a schedule, so let your own vet decide how often.
Common questions
Quick answers to what people ask most.
Can an Indie donate blood?
Yes. Breed isn't the deciding factor. Health, size, age, temperament, screening and compatibility are.
Is there a universal dog donor?
Not in the way people mean it. A DEA 1-negative dog is particularly useful, but the hospital still has to type or cross-match blood for each recipient.
Should a donor be paid?
No. The Government of India SOP says donation should be voluntary and unpaid. A programme may offer a health check or deworming instead.
