If your dog needs a vet and you have no car, call the hospital first, then take the fastest vehicle that can carry your dog safely. For most people at 2 am that is an ordinary cab or an auto, not a pet ambulance, and this guide is about making that work.

A planned vaccination is a different problem. There you can book ahead and choose for price and comfort.

Call the hospital first

Before you book anything, check that a vet is there and can treat what's wrong.

Don't spend twenty minutes comparing apps while your dog gets worse. Ring the hospital you plan to go to, say what is happening, and ask:

  1. Is a vet physically there right now?
  2. Do you have what my dog may need tonight: oxygen, X-rays or surgery?
  3. Do you have your own ambulance, or one you would call?

Our list of 24-hour vets in Bengaluru has a Call button for every clinic, grouped by area.

Get a vehicle moving

Book the nearest cab or auto, then phone the driver before they arrive.

Book the nearest car on whichever app you already use. As soon as a driver is assigned, call them and say it plainly:

I have a dog with me, about __ kg. It [can walk / can't stand]. I have a sheet for the seat and a [harness / carrier]. We're going to [clinic]. Are you okay to take us?

A driver can say no, and it's far better to hear that on the phone than at your gate. If one declines, cancel and book the next one. Don't argue.

An auto is often the first thing available. It works for a dog that can sit or stand calmly, held on a harness by a second person. It's a poor choice for a dog that has collapsed, is bleeding heavily, is struggling to breathe, is having seizures or may try to jump out. If an auto is the only thing moving, say so to the vet on the phone and ask whether to come in it or wait for a car.

Never carry a sick dog loose on a scooter. A fall is a second emergency on top of the first.

If the hospital offers an ambulance

An animal ambulance should mean more than a pet-friendly van. Ask whether trained staff come with it, whether it carries oxygen or a stretcher, and how long it will take to reach you. If the answer is longer than a cab, take the cab.

Bangalore Pet Hospital in Whitefield runs a pet ambulance and advertises 24/7 emergency service. Ask where the ambulance is now and which hospital it will take you to.

Book a planned trip

Uber Pet works if you book at least 60 minutes ahead. One pet per ride.

Uber Pet is the clearest app option in Bengaluru. Uber says it takes one dog or cat per ride and tells the driver a pet is travelling. It is reserve-only, from 60 minutes to 90 days ahead, which suits vaccinations, reviews and planned tests.

Enter the clinic as the destination, choose Uber Pet and leave time for traffic. Message the driver with your dog's size and whether you have a crate. Bring a washable sheet even though the ride accepts pets.

A pet taxi helps with a large dog or the trip home after sedation. Before you book, ask whether the quote is one-way or return, whether waiting is charged, how the dog is secured and whether the driver helps lift.

Both run pet taxis. A pet taxi is transport, not an ambulance, so use them for planned trips.

Move your dog safely

Sheet down, harness on, and a blanket as a stretcher if your dog can't stand.

If your dog can walk: put the harness and leash on before you open the front door. Lay a waterproof sheet on the seat, then a blanket that won't slip. Small dogs are safest in a carrier that is belted in or held.

If your dog can't stand: slide a firm blanket under the body and lift it as a stretcher with two people. After a fall or a road accident, keep the spine level. Don't pull the dog by the legs.

Don't muzzle a dog that is vomiting, struggling to breathe, overheated or has a facial injury. Dogs in pain may bite, so keep your face away, use a blanket as a barrier and follow the vet's instructions. Use a basket muzzle only if you already own one that fits.

Grab these on the way out

One of you handles the dog. The other talks to the driver and the clinic.

Set this up before you need it

Ten minutes now: two clinics, one pet taxi and one person with a car.

Common questions

Quick answers to what people ask most.

Can I book Uber Pet for right now?

No. Uber describes it as reserve-only, from 60 minutes to 90 days ahead. In an emergency, book an ordinary cab and call the driver.

Will an ordinary cab take my dog?

It is the driver's choice. Call as soon as one is assigned, say you have a dog, its size and that you have a sheet for the seat. If they decline, cancel and book the next.

What if no driver accepts?

Call the hospital back and ask about its own transport, then ring the neighbour or pet taxi you saved. Keep your dog still and follow the vet's first-aid instructions while you wait.
