Kochi has one clearly published option for a dog that may need blood: The Cochin Pet Hospital in Kadavanthra lists both a transfusion unit and 24-hour emergency care. Call the hospital treating your dog first. A vet must decide what blood product is needed and screen any proposed donor before blood can be collected.

The hospital does not claim to keep blood in stock or publish a donor register. Be ready for the treating team to ask you to locate a suitable donor while it handles the medical work.

If your dog needs blood now

Confirm the treatment plan before asking people to bring their dogs across the city.

  1. Ask whether your dog needs whole blood, red cells or plasma, and whether the current hospital can give it.
  2. Get the donor requirements from the vet, including age, weight and any test result it needs.
  3. If the clinic cannot transfuse, ask whether your dog is stable enough to move to Kadavanthra or whether a donor should come to the current clinic.
  4. Share only the hospital, contact person and donor requirements with apartment and local dog groups. Keep your home address and the patient's records private.

The collection and transfusion belong in a veterinary hospital. Do not collect blood privately or carry it between homes.

Who to call in Kochi

One hospital with a blood transfusion unit, in Kadavanthra, open 24 hours.

  • The Cochin Pet Hospital in Kadavanthra lists a blood transfusion unit among its surgical services, along with 24-hour emergency care, an in-patient unit and an ambulance. Its website gives +91 95393 35759 as well as the landline on the card above. Phone first and ask whether it has a donor or needs you to bring one.

No other Kochi hospital mentions transfusion on its website. Some may still do it, so at night start with the hospital already treating your dog, or one from our 24-hour vets in Kochi guide, and ask.

Before you offer a donor dog

Age and size are only the first screen. The veterinary team must clear the donor.

India's August 2025 guidelines describe a suitable canine donor as healthy and calm, between one and eight years old, vaccinated including rabies, regularly dewormed and clear of tick-borne disease. A dog that is pregnant or has recently nursed puppies should not donate. The national minimum is not always 25 kg: it varies from 5 to 7 kg for small breeds, 15 to 20 kg for medium breeds and 25 kg for large breeds.

Before collection, the hospital reviews the dog's history, examines them and tests their blood. The document gives a collection range of 15 to 20 ml per kg, followed by at least one to two hours of observation. It says cross-matching is usually unnecessary before a dog's first transfusion but recommends it after an earlier transfusion. Compatibility is a case-by-case veterinary decision.
