The best-documented low-cost option for a pet in Bengaluru is the Veterinary College Hospital at Hebbal. It's a teaching hospital, not a private clinic with a discount label: it publishes its clinical facilities and an official fee schedule. There are also government veterinary hospitals in the city, at Vasanth Nagar and Rajajinagar among others, which suit routine care.

What none of them publish is what is running today: queues, which tests are available, and whether a small-animal vet is in. One phone call before you travel saves a wasted trip.

Where to go for what

You needStart withAsk on the phone
A routine consultationThe nearest government hospital, or HebbalAre pet cases seen today, when do tokens stop, is the medicine in stock
A blood test or imagingHebbal, or a private hospitalThe exact test, same-day result, total price
SurgeryHebbal, or a clinic that gives a written estimateSurgeon, anaesthesia, monitoring, follow-up
A night emergencyA 24-hour hospitalIs a vet physically there, and the equipment you need

The lowest consultation fee isn't always the cheapest visit. If the first clinic can't run the test your dog needs and sends you across the city, you pay in travel and time. Ask what tests are likely, not just the registration fee.

Veterinary College Hospital, Hebbal

Registration was ₹50 in the morning and ₹100 in the evening on the 2021 fee sheet. Evening clinic runs up to 9 pm.

The college's contact page lists two lines for the Hebbal campus, 080-23411483 and 080-23410509.

KVAFSU says its Veterinary Clinical Complex treats pets and livestock, has a laboratory for clinical samples, runs an evening clinic up to 9 pm and has a peripheral hospital at Yelahanka.

An official fee sheet dated 26 August 2021 listed small-animal registration at ₹50 for the morning clinic and ₹100 for the evening clinic, with separate charges for laboratory tests, imaging and procedures. That shows what kind of service this is. It isn't today's price, so ask for the current fee and whether medicines or consumables have to be bought outside.

When you call, say what animal you're bringing, the main symptom, when it began and whether you need a particular test. Ask which gate or department handles small animals, and when tokens stop.

Government hospitals in the city

Two in the state directory, and a helpline that can tell you which one sees pet dogs near you.

The Vasanth Nagar hospital is opposite Cantonment railway station. The Rajajinagar one is at 64/1, 15th Main Road, Y Block. The district helpline, 1800 425 0012 or 080-23417107, runs from 7 am to 9 pm: ask it which government hospital near you is seeing pet dogs today.

Both hospitals are in the Karnataka Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services department's list for Bengaluru Urban. Which vet, vaccine, X-ray or surgery slot is available changes by the day, and the helpline is the quickest way to find out.

Lower-cost private clinics

Some publish their consultation fee. Ask for an itemised estimate before any test.

Some private clinics publish entry prices. Oh My Dawg in HSR Layout advertises a ₹350 general consultation and says it is open daily from 10 am to 10 pm. That can work out cheaper than Hebbal once you count the travel.

A published consultation fee covers the consultation only. Before tests or treatment, ask for an itemised estimate that covers:

If money is tight, say so before the work begins. Ask which test changes today's treatment, what can safely wait, and whether a generic medicine would do. A clear budget helps the vet choose, and it's nothing to apologise for.

What to take

Common questions

Quick answers to what people ask most.

Is a government vet free for pet dogs?

No. Registration is small, ₹50 to ₹100 on Hebbal's 2021 fee sheet, but tests, medicines, consumables and procedures are charged separately or bought outside.

Does Hebbal do blood tests and X-rays?

KVAFSU says the clinical complex has a laboratory, and its fee sheet lists pathology, biochemistry and imaging. Call to check that the test you need is running that day.

Which is cheapest: government, Hebbal or private?

For a routine visit, the nearest government hospital. For a case that clearly needs tests, Hebbal, because it can do them in one place. At night, neither: go to a 24-hour hospital and ask the fee on the phone.
